Sustaining successful turnaround in a high poverty public high school
Today’s American public education system faces one of the largest challenges in its history, the pervasive problem of failing schools and the resultant student dropouts. According to Research and Best Practices (2010), “There are 5,000 chronically low-performing schools in this country doing a disservice to hundreds of thousands of students” (p. 2). Focused efforts to rapidly improve failing schools has become known in the research as school turnaround. When successful cases of school turnaround have occurred, the success that is achieved in the initial turnaround is not always sustained over time. Too often, once a school has achieved rapid improvement resulting from turnaround efforts, the initial success levels off or does not sustain. This study investigated the actions taken by a high poverty public high school to successfully turnaround, in a brief period of time, the school’s state accountability rating from not meeting to meeting standard. The study also investigated the actions taken by the school to sustain the turnaround for three or more years. The two research questions that guided this study were as follows: (1) What actions were implemented by the school studied in order to successfully complete school turnaround, and (2) what actions were implemented by the school studied in order to sustain the success of the initial turnaround? Participants consisted of teachers, staff members, campus administrators, and central office staff who have worked with the school as part of the turnaround and sustainability process. The participants were selected using random purposeful sampling. Qualitative research methods were used following a single case design. Data were collected using interviews, archival documentation studies, and researcher journal coding with teachers, administrators, and central office staff who were directly involved with the school’s turnaround and sustainability efforts. Participant findings showed that school culture, instructional infrastructure, data fluency & interventions, talent management, leadership, student & family support, central office support, and safety & security were the major themes that led to and sustained successful school turnaround. In conclusion, this study poses questions for further research in the area of sustaining school turnaround efforts. Findings will add to the body of knowledge related to sustaining successful turnaround in high poverty public high schoolsEducational Leadership and Polic

The paper refers to furniture upholstery and solid wood production, made by small furniture producers in the municipality of San Juan Sacatepéquez, Guatemala. It is part of the development of theoretical and methodological approach to global supply of goods-CGM chain, which is to work, except that producers operate under analysis only at the national market. In sizes up the approach addressing issues related to the input product, to see the source of raw materials and processing. It emphasizes the production process in the workshops and the established relations with other actors in the raw materials supply and funding sources. The furniture placing shows the conditions in which they operate. The small producers of furniture organization role, opens new expectations in the production and marketing. The geographical location of the town creates a comparative advantage provision terms of raw materials and proximity to the capital to market the products.
Accelerating atmospheric models using GPUs
Environmental models are simplified representations of an
object or a process [1]. These models provide valuable information
on the nature of real-world phenomena and systems
[2], with many applications in science and engineering [3]. For
example, environmental models play an increasingly important
role in understanding the potential implications of climate
change [4].
There are many types of models in the environmental
sciences [5]. These models are often associated with large computational
costs because of their complexity [6]. The model
studied in this work, the Multiscale Online Nonhydrostatic AtmospheRe
CHemistry model (MONARCH), is an atmospheric
model that currently runs in the MareNostrum supercomputer
of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), one of the
Top-500 supercomputers in the world [7] [8]. MONARCH
provides regional mineral dust forecasts to the World Meteorological
Organization’s (WMO) Barcelona Dust Forecast Center
(BDFC) and the Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory and
Assessment System (SDS-WAS). MONARCH also provides
global aerosol forecasts to the International Cooperative for
Aerosol Prediction (ICAP) initiative
Dataset for evaluating the accessibility of the websites of selected Latin American universities
This article presents the process of building a dataset for evaluation of the accessibility of 368 web pages, beginning with Webometrics rankings, the WAVE tool was used in the evaluation of the web pages. The dataset documents data on repeated errors with higher frequency, in such a way that they alert the web developers, supporting them in creating more inclusive and accessible websites for all types of people, including users with disabilities. The data show that university websites have frequent problems related to the lack of alternative text linked to images. Some of the university websites included in this dataset were found to violate web accessibility requirements based on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 and 2.1. Therefore, this data has been shared to allow replication of the experiment, and serve as an input to future studies related to web accessibility. The dataset is hosted, with public access, in the Mendeley Dataset Repository. The authors thank Universidad de Las Américas, Ecuador, for funding this research through the project FGE.PAV.19.11
The main objective of this work is the modeling of a management system to optimize the power
flows between the different generators, storage systems and loads of a commercial aircraft
MEA to achieve greater autonomy, reliability and robustness.
To this end, an adaptation of a previous work described in the paper [1], in which a centralized
system-level management strategy based on model predictive control (MPC) is proposed for an
MEA to be able to schedule battery systems and exploit flexibility in load demand while satisfying
time-varying operational requirements.
The proposed control strategy aims to maintain energy storage and prolong the battery life cycle,
while minimizing load disconnections, trying to avoid constant state changes to increase the lifetime
of the devices. Using a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) formulation, different objective
functions are proposed to realize the control objectives, with soft constraints that improve the
feasibility of the model.
In addition, to lay the groundwork and understand what these new generations of More Electric
Aircraft and electric power systems consist of, the concept will be explained and a general review
of the technological advances used to achieve various objectives such as reducing greenhouse gas
emissions and reducing fossil fuel consumption will be provided.Universidad de Sevilla. Grado en Ingeniería Aeroespacia
